Manchester United and Chelsea maintain an interest in Timo Werner, but the Red Bull Leipzig forward has his heart set on a move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed another prolific season with the Bundesliga and Champions League upstarts, who are back in action on Saturday looking to kick start their challenge for the German title at home against Freiburg.

Werner has scored 28 goals in 40 appearances for club and country this term and could be available for at little as €47.5 million up until June 15 due to a clause in his contract.

A whole host of European heavyweights have been monitoring the versatile striker’s progress and Werner has spoken directly to Manchester United as well as Barcelona, while his agents have made contact with Chelsea.

Werner, according to The Athletic, has not discounted the possibility of remaining with Leipzig for another season and assessing his options in 12 months’ time, but if he is to leave, and his current employers were to receive a suitable offer, then the runaway Premier League leaders remain his No.1 choice.

The Germany international has taken into account the positive influence Jurgen Klopp is likely to have on his career, the quality of his potential new teammates, Liverpool’s playing style, which is not dissimilar to the high-octane strategy employed by Julian Nagelsmann at Leipzig.

Werner has also been swayed by the current positive environment fostered by Klopp, who stands on the brink of securing a first English league title success in 30 years.

Klopp is reported to have already held talks with Werner prior to Liverpool’s Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid and the player is far from overawed by the challenge he is likely to face in terms of nailing down a first team spot.

The formidable trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have spearheaded Liverpool’s dominance this season and severely restricted opportunities for January recruit Takumi Minamino.

Werner, meanwhile, has discounted a move to Leipzig’s domestic rivals Bayern Munich, a decision criticised by the German powerhouse’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge earlier this week. ‘I’m actually no longer astonished at anything, but I have never seen a player make such a statement in response to rumours in public,’ Rummenigge told Bild.
